Texas Facial Recognition Case Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Set to Give Deposition

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now required to participate in a deposition as part of an ongoing legal battle in Texas regarding the company's facial recognition technology, according to a recent ruling by Justice Jeff Rambin of Texas’s Sixth Court of Appeals.

The decision, made on Tuesday, reveals that Meta's request for relief from an order compelling Zuckerberg's oral deposition has been denied by the state court. The exact date for the deposition is unspecified at this point.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton initiated the lawsuit in February 2022, alleging that Meta has been improperly utilizing the biometric data of millions of Texans without obtaining their informed consent. The lawsuit also contends that Meta violated the state’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act by not disclosing crucial information, including its collection of biometric identifiers, with the intention of persuading Texas-based Facebook users to use the platform.

In the recent ruling, Texas argued that Zuckerberg possesses unique personal knowledge relevant to the lawsuit, asserting that Meta breached state laws related to biometric data collection and deceptive trade practices.

It's worth noting that Meta settled a facial recognition-related class-action lawsuit in 2021 for a substantial $650 million. Attorneys at the time described it as one of the largest settlements ever for a privacy violation, ensuring at least $345 for every class member interested in compensation.

As of now, Meta has not responded to requests for comments on the recent developments in the Texas lawsuit.
