The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), a part of the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry, has taken notice of Amazon India for allegedly selling sweets on its website under the name “Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad.” This move comes in response to a complaint filed by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), claiming that Amazon is involved in deceptive trade practices by selling sweets under the guise of Ram Temple prasad.
Rohit Kumar Singh, Chief Commissioner of the CCPA and Union Consumer Affairs Secretary, carefully examined the complaint. He noted that Amazon is offering various sweets and food products for sale, claiming to be prasad from the Ayodhya Ram Temple. In a released statement, the Ministry expressed concern, stating, “Enabling the sale of food products online that make false representations misleads consumers regarding the genuine characteristics of the product. Such practice falsely influences consumers to make purchase decisions they might not have otherwise taken, had the accurate attributes of the product been mentioned.”
To address this, the Centre has invoked Rule 4(3) of the Consumer Protection (e-commerce) Rules, 2020, which prohibits any e-commerce entity from adopting unfair trade practices. The term "misleading advertisement" is defined under Section 2(28) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, as an advertisement “which falsely describes such product or service; or gives a false guarantee to, or is likely to mislead the consumers as to the nature, substance, quantity or quality of such product or service.”
The CCPA has issued a notice to Amazon, demanding a response within seven days. Failure to comply may result in necessary action being initiated against Amazon under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the Ministry stated.
